Scientists in Switzerland made the chance discovery, finding that vanadium dioxide behaves in a similar way to neurons in the human brain. The substance is made of tiny crystals which change colour when heated. Researchers found that these crystals can ‘remember’ the temperature at which they were heated and revert back to their original colour when cooled to the same temperature.
