When people think about the future of AI, they tend to think about two things: exponential growth and superintelligent machines. The first is easy to dismiss: even if AI does grow exponentially, it will take a long time to reach superhuman levels, and we will have plenty of time to adapt. The second is more difficult to dismiss, but I believe it is still wrong.
The problem with the second idea is that it conflates two different kinds of AI: general intelligence and narrow intelligence. General intelligence is what we typically think of when we think of AI: a machine that can understand and learn any task that a human can. Narrow intelligence, on the other hand, is a machine that is very good at one specific task, but not necessarily any others.
Most of the AI that exists today is narrow intelligence. This includes everything from the algorithms that recommend songs on Spotify to the self-driving cars being developed by Google and Tesla. Narrow intelligence is extremely useful, but it is not a threat to humanity.
The reason that people are afraid of AI is that they think it will eventually become general intelligence. This is a possibility, but it is by no means a certainty. Even if AI does become general intelligence, there is no reason to believe that it will be a threat to humanity. In fact, there are good reasons to believe that it will be beneficial.
The first reason is that general intelligence is likely to be much better at solving problems than narrow intelligence. This is because general intelligence will be able to understand the world in a way that narrow intelligence cannot. For example, a general intelligence could easily figure out how to fix a broken computer, whereas a narrow intelligence would not even know where to start.
The second reason is that general intelligence is likely to be more ethical than narrow intelligence. This is because general intelligence will be able to understand the ethical implications of its actions in a way that narrow intelligence cannot. As an example, consider a self-driving car. If it is only programmed to maximize passenger safety, then it may make decisions that kill pedestrians, in order to avoid killing the passengers. However, if the car is programmed to also consider the ethical implications of its actions, then it would not make such a decision.
The third reason is that general intelligence is likely to be more cooperative than narrow intelligence. This is because general intelligence will be able to understand the benefits of cooperation in a way that narrow intelligence cannot. For example, consider two self-driving cars. If they are only programmed to maximize passenger safety, then they may compete with each other in a way that is dangerous to both passengers and pedestrians. However, if they are programmed to also consider the benefits of cooperation, then they would not compete with each other in such a way.
These three reasons show that fears of AI are not even wrong. There is no reason to believe that AI will be a threat to humanity. In fact, there are good reasons to believe that it will be beneficial.
